Learning Music at The New Learning Project

The studying of being a musician lends itself to a combination of two learning strategies.

Linear — never ending pursuits that help drive students to become better musicians

  • musicians strive to become:
  • more supple players
  • comfortable at slower and faster tempos
  • more accurate
  • better readers
  • in better command of dynamics
  • more versatile
  • more experienced
Circular — clear accomplished recurring goals that reinforce a student’s knowledge base
musicians continually demonstrate accomplished tasks by:
  • knowing all twelve tones
  • recognizing each clef and understanding their meanings
  • recognizing all the notes of the staff
  • recognizing key signatures
  • knowing how scales and chords are constructed in all twelve keys
  • recognizing tempo and dynamic markings
  • building and maintaining a repertoire of pieces to play

Marcos Levy encourages his students at The New Learning Project to build their musicianship using both of these two learning strategies.

Who comes to The New Learning Project for music?

While piano and guitar students make up the bulk of The New Learning Project’s music lessons. Other musicians have sought out Marcos Levy’s teachings.

Bass players, horn players, mandolin players, hammer dulcimer players, violin players, whistle players, to name some, have all benefited from a visit to the The New Learning Project. Why? It is because Marcos has something to offer for the musician in all of us. He affords his fellow musicians a glimpse into the fascinating workings of music, leading them to discover and rediscover music for themselves.

It is this type of learning Marcos Levy and The New Learning Project inspire. Students develop their own ability to ask questions, to follow their own ideas, and to own their success.

“I am often amazed and delighted with the discoveries my students make for themselves. I help them develop a musical vocabulary and framework, and they show me what can be done with it. It’s brilliant.”
